*APPLAUSE*

Great article, my dear friend!! I totally agree with all the points you listed... and yes, you *bet* I am using baby signs with Gab... and am an ardent fan of Signing Time! ;) And yes... 3 year old Gab and I are still signing, for all the reasons you mentioned!!

Let me share something interesting with you on point 5 - Signing helps with spelling.

Initially, I was very reluctant to let Gab learn the ABC Signs (Signing Time Volume 5) as I thought it would deter his reading abilities. I thought it would be better to teach him words before he learns the Alphabets. Oh boy.... was I so so so WRONG!!

Anyway, I went ahead and showed him Vol 5 and by 18 months, he learnt all his ABCs.

Beginning this year, I noticed he was very interested in forming words. Then, he kept asking me to finger spell to him all the time(which irritated me at times... ops!!), and started forming words with his ABC floor mats. The first few words he formed himself are - GO, STOP, YES, NO, PIXAR, DISNEY, PRESENTS, FROG, and of course GABRIEL.

And now, he can spell at least 20 words. That was within a short timeframe of one month. I was amazed when he finger spell "MOSQUITO" (and saying it out loud) to me about 3 weeks ago. I recalled that I casually spelt "MOSQUITO" to him about 2 times, and then he surprised me by spelling it back to me one fine day.

His nursery teacher said Gab is teaching everyone in class how to sign the Alphabets too.... (the class learns a new Alphabet each week, and they are at letter H this week).

Now, instead of feeling "irritated", I encouraged him and even explain what the word means. =)

Oh.... I can't wait to see the Angel in August!! It'll be so wonderful that Gab finally meets a little friend who can sign with him.

See you soon... my dear friend =)

Hugs and Love to you and the Angel....

I agree with you with the signing. But I do have to teach myself patients to learn it.

I've also used signing with my children when they were babies. The book I read was called "Baby Signs" by Linda Acredolo & Susan Goodwyn. We just made up signs for some words and were amazed too when the baby started signing back!

It's true that long before the babies are able to verbally speak that they're able to gesture as a means of communication.

Hi Cheryl, great job on signing with Gab! Yes, I can't wait for the Angel to have someone to sign with, too! I think it is another form of communication, isn't it? I like the part where Gab goes to school and teaches his friends! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Mike, don't worry, you can actually pick it up really quickly! Give it a try! *Smile*

Hi Mustard Seed Mom, thanks for coming by! I think half the fun is making up the signs and it gives room to a lot of creativity, doesn't it! Yes, I think essentially, humans want to communicate and even babies from young! Thanks for sharing!
