I don't want to use steroid creams either. There is a non-steroid ointment, Protopic that my dermatologist prescribed that works for me.

I will try carrot juice. Thanks!

May I know how many carrots do you juice per time? ANd how often to drink it? I wonder why it works tho? Betacarotene?! Will a normal juicer do? I don't have one. :( Will a blender do?

Hi Serene! Sorry about the late reply! I usually use 2 carrots and an apple for my daughter but the yield can be different, depending on the juicer! You can't use a blender as you need to extract the juice from the carrots and separate the pulp. I've read quite a bit of research on carrot juice and all seem to be pointing to its rich vitamin and mineral oil content. She once drank it daily and the skin was consistently good! But the skin can become yellow and once you stop, the yellowing goes away. And also, a doctor I have consulted has verified that one will not turn jaundiced from carrot juice and the yellowing of the skin is only a colour. My daughter did have a little patch of yellow on her face but it went away when I stopped.

Try it and let me know if it works for you! :) All best!

Hi alternative mom,

Thanks for posting about your experiences! I'm glad I found your site. Both my sons, age 6 years and 5 months have eczema. With our first one, we are very new to the experience and learnt through constant visits to the PD and trial and error about how to deal with it. It was really quite a nightmare when he was about two years old when he would scratch himself awake every night and then refuse to sleep until we feed him milk and scratch him. Thankfully his eczema is now more under control and there's the only occasional flare-up. He's into the itch-scratch cycle though, so we'll probably have to work on that. Will try the carrot-apple juicing. We are using QV lotion and QV bodywash and Sebamed oil shower gel.

For the younger one we are using Topicream recommended by the PD and available at Guardian. For really bad days, I'll use a little of the Hydrocortison prescribed by the PD. He gets moisturised at least twice a day. One thing that seems to work a little is the Diamond filtered water. My aunt who has the machine (we don't) brings some over and apply it on both my sons. My elder one claims that it helps to stop his itch (not sure whether it's psychological though).

My hubby used to be very sore about why both his sons have to go through this. But after finding out that there are many parents out here who have to go through similar or worse experiences, he's now more circumspect.

Let's press on and support each other!

Cheers,
Sammy

Dear Sammy,

Thanks so much for dropping by and giving me a note of encouragement! You are right! Supporting and cheering one another on as parents dealing with eczema helps, especially on days when it flares up!

Like you, my experience with the Angel has kept me a lot wiser when it comes to the second. I must say that for me, avoiding dairy in my diet has helped to keep the Other Angel's eczema at bay, with occasion slight flares.

While we might not know for now why our children suffer from eczema, at least we know there's a wealth of information out there, people supporting one another and well, most likely a light at the end of the tunnel.

Did you try the carrot-apple juicing?

Hang in there and run the marathon!

Hi alternative mom,

My 2.5 year-old daughter has eczema, too. It's great to read about your tips on how to control the condition. May I ask where we can buy Epaderm in Singapore? Where do you usually buy it from? We live in Singapore.

Thanks and best wishes,
brenda

Hi Brenda,

How's your daughter's eczema now? I'm not sure if I'd recommend Epaderm to be used in Singapore at all. It is exceedingly oily and will really heat up in our climate. I use it in the aircon at night and only when my child's skin is cracking up here but haven't used one on ages. I still have an unopened bottle and if it is any use to you, please let me know. It can only be easily purchased in the UK (or maybe other European countries).

I find carrot juicing to help in Singapore and also light moisturizer, rather than anything oil based.

Let me know if I can help in any other way.

Diet is very important for Eczema patients. Food like seafood, peanuts, chicken should be avoided..

There is a video on Eczema problems among children here - http://tcmhealthcare.wordpress.com/2008/09/15/eczema-problems-among-children/

Dear Alternative Mom,

Thank you for your blog.
I plan on trying the carrot juice remedy. I believe it is the Omega-3 content of the fish oil that is nourishing for the skin, I will try adding that fat to my baby's diet.
Eczema has plagued my six month old baby. She has had beautiful skin until she was nearly six months old. Eczema has mainly affected her torso and is starting on her scalp.
I have found a great cream that seems to keep the inflammation and itching at bay (knock on wood) - it is a Calendula cream made by Weleda.
I plan on trying the dream cream - thanks for the recommendation.
Treating the scalp is my current dilema.

hi alternative mom,
I came across your blog while searching a cure for my eczema and am really glad to see the remedy provided. I definetely will try the carrot juice and hope it helps for me. I have been having eczema since I was a baby and it certainly doesn't even get a lil better 24 years later. I still get the stares and people still move away from me on the bus (even better, I get two seats) oh yeah just wanted to enquire about the dream cream and the dream wash. I am residing in Singapore and am seriously interested in getting some of the dream cream and dream wash to try out. Do you know where in singapore can I get it in singapore?? also, for the fish oil you recommended, I have been taking it for a while though not very consitent as I will forget to eat it here and there. Is there a certain brand that is better? as the one I am taking now doesn't seem to have any effect on me.

Hope your angel gets better and all the best to you. =) god bless
